My mother was curious about everything, and she was herself a curious mixture of progressive and traditional values.  She was certainly a product of her time, but even as a child she read widely (not just Cosmo and its ilk, as implied in an earlier post), following the progress of World War II by reading the daily newspapers as a child under 10.
