Things I Love: Market Wit

Quick Wit

Late summer at our farmer’s market, I was picking through the multicolored array of tomatoes, the apotheosis of summer to our minds, and I found a little tomato that bore a fleshy protuberance. I am not above anthropomorphizing produce, and I knew that I was going to take this little guy home as he would otherwise be passed over: I imagine that dealing with the norms and pressures of Produce Conformity is harsh. Before I carefully placed him in my bag, however, I asked the woman beside me, also selecting tomatoes, “Which ones are better, the males or the females?” She looked at my hand which offered up the little tomato with its odd little appendage for her appraisal and, without missing a beat, she replied, “They’re both good, but the females are sweeter.”

Male tomato (right) and companion. Both were wonderful.

People can be awesome.
